    Can you reboot off the old kernel?
    
    Debian doesn't usually remove old kernels.  It leaves a big long
    chain of them accessible in lilo.conf or menu.lst.
    
    I don't know anything about software raid, but if you can fdisk -l /dev/sda
    and see /dev/sda1, you shoudl be able to mount that filesystem.  But since
    you said it's raid 5, I am guessing you need to mount at least 3 filesystems
    simultaneously to get your system mounted.
    
    I wish I knew the right questions about mdadm to ask.  I'm forwarding your
    email to someone else who uses software raid.
