If you can boot into a shell, try updating the packages
(sudo apt-get update) and reconfiguring xserver
with the command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I also believe that some of the fstab entries are generated dynamically. I'm
not sure if that would interfere with boot, but the dmesg log will tell you
    that.

P.S. I have really enjoyed the Ubuntu family of distros, I have the KDE
oriented Kubuntu running on my primary desktop, my older son prefers the
Gnome based Ubuntu on his laptop and my younger son has xfce based Xubuntu
running on his old IBM Thinkpad. All work flawlessly except for the sound on
    the IBM 600E.
