    Thanks Dave and Ro;

I didn't mention that I WAS able to boot from the distro DVD into
"recovery" mode. This appears to stop as root just before the X server
is started. At that point I checked my /etc/fstab and the line added
looks just fine. The next time I actually commented that line if effect
disabling it. That seems to make no difference. What is strange is
that I had the 2nd splash set to something other than the default. This
WAS working just find including earlier today. Now the 2nd splash
screen appears to be the distro install default.

Also, if I boot from the disto DVD and enter into LIVE mode the system
just works fine in this mode. So other than the HDD perhaps this would
    rule out any hardware issues.

My money is still on the on-board ATI graphics and/or LCD monitor
combo. I've had issues with these with all distros from the get-go.
Stange through that any and all install processes don't have an issue
with them as the install graphics look just fine. And when I check the
settings in the X11/xorg.conf the seem correct. Of course, then the
only way to get any visual video is to change the driver to "vesa".

I guess I will tackle it more in the AM. Maybe I should bring this
combo along with me on the 6th so we, as a group, can do some diags as a
    learning exercise.

Keep the ideas coming. (actually, other than getting Linux to boot on
my PPC servers, I don't think I've had this much trouble with ANY linux
EVER on ANY other machine. I bet its the mobo/chipset combo!!!!!)

    Bob
