Hi,
what you want is an IRC client. There are tons of them out there
and everyone will tell you that this one or that one is the best. On
Windope it is undoubtedly mIRC, on Linux (which I assume is the system of
choice) you have the choice between console apps and those that run on X.
I found a list for either here
http://www.ircreviews.org/clients/platforms-unix.html and here
http://www.ircreviews.org/clients/platforms-unix-x.html . I am sure I used
kIRC (obsolete) and ksirc on KDE and they both worked fine. There are
others that let you do all kinds of whacky stuff such as running scripts
and change colors and get (dis)organized in any form and fashion. I bet
you have some of the ones listed on your system already, they are usually
part of the typical distros.
There is a set of a few commands you need to know to join channels once
connected to the IRC server or server network (there are again dozens and
everyone will tell you that this one or that one is the best). Of course,
you can run your own IRC server and get people to hang out on your box.
IRC commands are nicely documented here
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/misc/ccosmos.html.
I used to spend hours in chatrooms when I lived in Germany (and where it
was/is freakin' expensive paying for local calls by the minute). I met my
wife via IRC.
HTH,
David K.

[Eclug] #eclug irc?
Hey - a non-production related questions from me!!!
Believe it or not I have never delved into the world of IRC (nope - not
even AIM). But since I'm trying to get more involved in projects
outside of work I find that many projects often maintain an IRC channel
for group communications.
Even our own ECLUG.net site speaks of such a link. So, my question is:
I have gaim installed which actually works allowing me to communicate
with some other developers (on AIM I believe) but can someone please
explain how I would go about defining the link to communicate with the
#eclug group?
I know I should ask my 11 year old grandson how to do this but I'm sure
he's busy doing something important (God its tough getting old-er!).
Bob
